● fathom nom masculin (anglais fathom) Unité anglo-saxonne de longueur, utilisée pour les profondeurs marines, équivalant à 6 feet ou 2 yards (environ 1,83 m).

ÉTYM. Mil. XVIIIe; angl. fathom « longueur couverte par les deux bras étendus; mesure de longueur égale, selon les usages, à 6, ou 5,5, ou 5 pieds », 1580; cf. Faedm au VIIe, mot germanique.

1 FATHOM, s. m. (Commerce) mesure dont on se sert en Moscovie, qui contient sept piés d'Angleterre, et environ la dixième partie d'un pouce, ce qui revient, mesure de France, à six piés sept pouces et quelques lignes, le pié d'Angleterre n'étant que d'onze pouces quatre lignes et demi de roi. 2 La disposition des fonds connus invite à penser que le plateau continental serait à une profondeur de 3 à 400 m au moins, nettement plus profond que les 100 fathoms (183 m) […] qu'on attribue généralement. Charlesworth (…) citant Harland (1950), considère que le plateau continental antarctique est à 280 fathoms, soit 510 m. Notons qu'au large de la Terre Adélie la courbe − 500 dessine parfaitement les fjords de l'Astrolabe et de la Zélée, ce qui n'est pas en désaccord avec cette notion.
